| Under the guidance of Cathy Fiorillo and Judy Haverman, a small group met on November 3rd to start the process of reclaiming and refurbishing an historical part of our neighborhood: the police and fire call boxes.
A presentation on the call box project and a request for funds will occur at the January 8 GPCA meeting - mark your calendars to attend this meeting.
These are the metal structures that allowed for instant communications with either the police or the fire department.....used before cell phones were even dreamed of!
They differ slightly in shape, but all now share an equal sense, and appearance, of disrepair and abandonment. DC CulturalTourism began a citywide project to preserve them several years ago. It turned out to be a bigger and more expensive undertaking than had been anticipated. Art on Call! went back to the drawing board.
It has now resurfaced with a pledge from the city to provide a stipend, for each box, to help cover the cost of replacement parts and paints. But time is running out. After six years, Cultural tourism DC has decided to bring the Art on Call project to a close and we have until October 2008 before they close their doors and stop providing stipends.
The rest of the money needs to be raised. And the time/work component is all volunteer. Many neighborhoods have joined in....Dupone Circle, Georgetown, Cleveland Park, Wesley Heights.
Please sign up! Your money, time and effort is needed. And it will be fun for all involved. So far, our team consists of Cathy and Judy, Bill Putnam, Nancy Tartt, Jarrett Ferrier, Dean and Sarah Hill.
See below the nice map that Bill Putnam has provided us showing the locations of all nine boxes in Glover Park. Nancy Tartt has started putting together the repair cost for each box. (They will all differ.) Check back to this page for updates.

Check out if there is one near you. Also, note how many times you have walked right by them without even knowing they were there. We would like that to change.
As a team, and with all the community input we can muster, we will develop a color scheme, select the art that goes into each one, and get on with the actual work.
Join in! It's our history! It's fun! Give money! Share your ideas! Spread the word! Glover Park Art On Call! has begun! To discuss how you can help, please call or e-mail Cathy Fiorillo at 202-342-0225, cathyfiorillo@verizon.net
